The last push!

So today is the last chance we have to finish three essays for Leeds about Chinese culture. And of course, in true student style, we have left it till today to do. Because it wouldn't be university without deadlines and almost missing them. But I think we're gonna be ok. I've just been to the bank to pay for my flight ticket. It was almost...easy. No queue, no fuss. Only two (or three) pieces of paper stamped. (Sometimes there's like 15 stamped just to get a new pin) So that was a weird China experience.

It was like China kicked me in the face yesterday. We all have those days but yesterday was exceptional. And to top it off my fried rice dinner was disappointing. If I'm gonna eat the oiliest thing China produces then I want the oil to be gooooood. But speaking of other culinary delights, Maddie from Oz sent me my birthday present (ahem) , which mainly consisted of chocolate with cute little pictures of Aussie animals. This is not a real picture from me because the wrappers are all in the bin, but it's just the same!

How cool is that? I love Australia's animals, they're sooo random (another Aussie quote from S.H.H!) I am loving Australia right now, reading Bill Bryson's travel writing there called Down Under.
Here is my version of a patriotic UK style cadburys:

YAY! This would be funny.

The interesting thing is that it actually tastes really different to cadburys in the UK (The Aussie choc, not the queen choc) but still went down very good and ten times better than any choc here in China ie. Dove chocolate! So was very grateful for Maddie's parcel. Good to know if I go to Aus then I can still eat lots of choc. I've heard the taste is to do with the heat or something?

Anyway, should stop googling chocolate facts and get on with this work. Procrastination is soo much fun! When you don't have facebook you have to find other ways, and trust me, it's not hard. Speaking more about chocolate, me and Issy are going to whisk tonight to celebrate end of essays! Here is what I had there last time...

A royal wedding

So, I have only been to one wedding in my life, which was of a teacher from the school I taught at on my gap year, who I didn't even know, and had never spoken to in my life. The Chinese wedding was a lavish affair, with glitter spray in the brides hair, and a fluffy bolero over her diamonte encrusted poofy dress. The wedding reception had maybe around 300people invited? This Friday, the Royal wedding in England between Prince William and Kate Middleton was screened to 2million people around the world, how scary is that?! I can't deny how much I've been looking forward to seeing it! Maybe it's because I've been in China for 8 months now and I'm missing blighty, but I like to think it's more being a romantic at heart, because the couple seem geuinely in love, and sooo sweet. Me and some Leeds friends went to O'Malleys (the famous Irish pub here, the English pub had no event, wasn't even open strangely enough...) and celebrated watching it on the big screen drinking pimms and having chips and pizza. Starting the pimms at about 4am gave me a headache by 11pm though! This kind of event is so rare back at home, and always so much fun because it kind of brings everyone together. I truely loved every minute of the wedding, including the dresses and kisses on the balcony. Awww.. ♥♥♥

On Saturday, I met up with Ben and we had some amazing XiaoLongBao (traditional Shanghaiese dumplings) near People's Square. Then we went to the pet market (his fave place!) and he purchased several cool little fishies. Opposite the market is an antiques/general chinese crap market, which looked interesting, so we went to check it out. It had lots of cool stuff which I don't need, but really wanted.

Like this cool buddha, who wouldn't want that!?
